Methodist Teacher Sentenced For Sexual Assault Of Pre-School Girl

A teenager who sexually assaulted a 4-year-old at a preschool will spend the next 18 years in prison.

Andrew C. Glidwell, 19, of Hendersonville, plead guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual battery. He was sentenced to nine years to serve at 100 percent for each count, which will run consecutively.

The guilty plea comes less than a month before the case was scheduled to go to trial.

“I think it is a very good resolution to this case,” said Ray Whitley, 18th Judicial District Attorney. “The family was very interested in having their daughter not have to testify at the trial.”

Glidwell was a part-time teacher at the First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville’s Children First program, where the crimes occurred. According to the prosecution, Glidwell approached the girl on three separate occasions while the she was sleeping to make sexual advances.

Christian Man Sentenced For Sexual Abuse Of Teen Girl

A judge on Wednesday sentenced a Washburn man to 17 years in prison with five years suspended for sexually abusing a girl.

Justice Kevin Cuddy sentenced Eric A. Ericson, 57, on a charge of gross sexual assault. He handed down a concurrent five-year prison term for a charge of unlawful sexual contact.

Cuddy also gave Ericson a five-year concurrent sentence on a charge of sexual abuse of a minor. He will be required to register as a sex offender. The abuse occurred in the town of Wade in Aroostook County.

A jury found Ericson guilty last week after a three-day trial in Aroostook County Superior Court in Caribou, according to Aroostook County Assistant District Attorney Todd Collins. The jury deliberated for about an hour before rendering the verdict.

Collins said Wednesday that the victim, who is not related to Ericson, testified she was 11 years old when the abuse began. She told the court that Ericson had sex with her and forced her to touch him and that he also touched her.

“There was not much that he did not do to this victim,” Collins said.

Collins said the gross sexual assault and the unlawful sexual contact occurred between March 2003 and June 2005, when the victim was under 14. The sexual abuse took place between June 2005 and March 2006, when the victim was 14.

Ericson also addressed the court. He called himself a Christian and said he did not commit the crimes he was convicted of.

After Ericson spoke, Collins called him “cold, calculating, heartless and emotionless.” He also told the judge that Ericson had been charged with kidnapping his own children in 1987 and also was charged with sexual assault in Nebraska. Collins told the judge Ericson had not been convicted of those charges. He said outstanding warrants were issued for Ericson's arrest for crimes allegedly committed in several states and in Canada. Ericson lived in Texas before coming to Maine, Collins said.

Since Ericson has not been convicted of those crimes, Cuddy did not consider them in his sentencing.

Mother/Son Duo Convicted Of Scamming Fellow Church Goers

A Cumberland County mother and son were convicted Thursday on various theft charges stemming from a scam that targeted their friends, family, and members of their own church.

Prosecutors said Robert and Esther Lebo told people they needed money to pursue a lawsuit that didn't exist. Robert's daughter, Megan Lebo, pleaded guilty to similar charges earlier this week.

Robert Lebo was convicted on 10 of the 14 theft charges against him. Esther Lebo was convicted on all 14 charges against her.

Police said the trio scammed nearly $750,000 out of their victims. The District Attorney said Megan Lebo spent the money on living expenses and the victims will likely never see restitution.

Christian Mother Starves Son To Death For Not Saying 'Amen'

Bizarre and horrible story just popped up on AP from Baltimore, about a 'Christian' woman from the US who was born a Hindu in Trinidad. She starved her one-year-old son to death at the behest of a religious cult leader.

Ria Ramkissoon, a member of the 1 Mind Ministries cult, pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in the death of her son, Javon Thompson. She was known as Princess Marie in the cult, which you can read more about here.

The plea agreement contained this extraordinary provision: If Javon is resurrected, the plea will be withdrawn.

The cult leader told followers not to feed Javon when he did not say 'Amen' during a mealtime prayer.

Three people were convicted of second-degree murder.

Ramkissoon, who has been in jail since her 2008 arrest, was given a suspended sentence and five years of probation on Wednesday. She will be committed to a residential treatment facility. The Baltimore Sun has been covering the trial.

Baptist Pastor Convicted of Abusing Developmentaly Disabled Boy

A Jefferson County Judge has convicted a former Assistant Pastor at Red Rocks Baptist Church of abusing a developmentally disabled volunteer at the church by dumping trash on him.

Jason Smoker went on trial this week in Jefferson County on one misdemeanor count of neglect of an at risk victim. A judge convicted Smoker on Wednesday and he will be sentenced in May.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on Aug. 27, 2008. An affidavit in the case reports that Smoker asked a developmentally disabled young man at the church to clean a school bus prior to an outing. But Smoker believed the young man did an "unsatisfactory" job of cleaning the bus. So Smoker covered up the young man's eyes and head then had him lay on the ground near the bus and dumped trash on top of him that was apparently taken from the bus trash cans.

Following the incident, the church placed Smoker on probation. He was fired about a year later after Jefferson County authorities filed criminal charges against Smoker.

Christian Pleads Guilty to $432,000+ Fraud

A former Detroit city employee pleaded guilty to a fraud charge today for illegally selling benefits from the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) designed to serve low- and moderate-income pregnant, breast-feeding and postpartum women.

Jacqueline Taylor, 40, will be sentenced July 13 by U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman and faces up to five years in prison. She worked at the Eastside Health Center in Detroit

"Conservative estimates of loss attributable to Taylor range from $432,000 to $648,000, " Mark McClutchey, special agent for the USDA, wrote in an affidavit last month.

Federal agents said in an affidavit that Taylor has fraudulently been selling WIC benefits to people not qualified for them since at least 2000 or 2001.

The WIC program, designed for needy pregnant and breast-feeding women, and children younger than 5 with nutrition problems, provides coupons and electronic debit cards that can be used for items such as baby formula, juice, milk.

In a plea agreement signed by Taylor, she wrote today: “I sold WIC benefits to individuals whose income made them ineligible for the benefits. I regret having engaged in this activity.”

According to court documents, federal investigators found this note tucked in Taylor’s Bible during a search.

“Dear Lord, I have done something wrong as you know. As of today I have got a call concerning what I did wrong,” Taylor wrote in the Bible seized at the Eastside Health Center in February 2009. “I admitted to you Lord it was wrong, so please I hope they look over this.”

Pastor Sentenced for Rape of Teen

Earlier this year iSurf News reported on a story regarding former Branch Street Church of God in Christ Pastor Prince Wilbert Woolfolk. Apparently Woolfolk had been accused of raping an Owensboro teen. According to a Daviess County press release, Woolfolk was convicted of the crime and sentenced to 20-years in prison on Monday, April 12.

In 2008, Woolfolk was arrested and indicted for sexual assault and rape of an unnamed teenager. The actual crime was committed roughly 25 years ago. The actual accusation wasn’t made until 2007.

Woolfolk was serving as pastor at the Seventh Street Church of God in Owensboro when the crime was committed. In 2007, while he was pastor at the Branch Street Church of God in Christ in Madisonville, the mother of the 17-year-old victim filed a complaint with local judicial departments. Woolfolk stepped down from his position of Pastor in Madisonville shortly thereafter.

During the trial, testimonies led to the conclusion that Woolfolk had picked the teen up from an Owensboro high school to talk to her regarding her service in the church choir. It was during this time that the rape allegedly took place.

Baptist Pastor Sentenced for Lying to Federal Arson Investigators

A former pastor will serve three years probation for lying to federal agents who investigated an arson at the Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church in Leavenworth.

39-year old Marvin Clay of Leavenworth pleaded guilty to one count of misprision of a felony. In his plea, he admitted that when he was interviewed by federal agents investigating an Oct. 31, 2008, fire at Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church, he concealed the fact he knew co-defendant Carva Lee White had set the fire.

Clay admitted that about a week before the fire, White described how he intended to start a fire at the church. Because the church had fire insurance, White told Clay, they could profit by finding a contractor who would inflate repair bids and pay them kickbacks.

On Nov. 1, 2008, Clay told agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that he didn’t know who set the fire.

Last month, co-defendant Carva Lee White was sentenced to 150 months in federal prison.

Preacher Convicted of Murdering Wife After Caught Molesting Teenager

An Alabama evangelist and former paratrooper was convicted Friday of murdering his wife and storing her body in a freezer for four years.

After deliberating for 1 1/2 hours, a jury in Mobile also found 39-year-old Anthony Hopkins guilty of rape, sodomy, incest and sexual abuse of a child between the ages of 12 and 16.

Hopkins was arrested in 2008 while preaching at a rural revival in Clarke County on charges that he killed 36-year-old Arletha Hopkins, a mother of eight.

He showed no reaction on Friday as deputies handcuffed him and led him from the court.

Children who grew up in his home and who had testified against him stood in front row and hugged each other and cried as the verdict was read.

"There is nothing pleasing about any of this, it is all very disturbing," Ashley Rich, the prosecuting attorney said after. "A number of children have been harmed and the chances of them fully recovering are slim."Authorities said a teenage relative that Hopkins had abused and impregnated led police to the body of his wife in 2008.

Investigators say Hopkins killed his wife in a violent fight in 2004 after she caught him having sex with the teenager. They said he then stuffed the wife's body into a freezer at the Mobile home he shared with her, the couple's six children and two of her children from a previous relationship.

In closing arguments Friday, Assistant District Attorney Jill Phillips said Hopkins terrorized his wife and young children, isolated them and used the Bible to manipulate them.

Anglican Bishop Convicted of Drunk Driving

An Anglican bishop in Solomon Islands has been fined for drink driving and crashing a Diocesan vehicle.

The Solomon Star newspaper reports that Charles Koete, who is the Bishop of Central Solomons Diocese, pleaded guilty to the charges related to his crash on January the 1st.

He had also been charged with driving without a driving licence.

Police said earlier in the day his son was seen driving the truck, however later when they were about to leave to pay for more beers, the accused insisted he drive even though he was too drunk.

They reportedly went to a liqour shop and to a lodge where they bought more beers and then set off back to the bishop’s official residence.

Alglican Priest Sentenced for Molesting Alter Boy

A paedophile Anglican priest has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for sexually abusing an altar boy in the mid-1970s.

Wilfred Edwin Dennis, 74, has been jailed before for similar offences against other altar boys.

The victim, about 15, was assaulted in the robing room of a northern suburbs church.

Adelaide District Court Judge Sydney Tilmouth said Dennis remained in self denial despite the previous conviction.

He said the offence was a gross breach of trust and a prison sentence was needed as a deterrent to others.

Dennis has been given a 12-month non-parole period.

Christian Father Senteced for Bible-based Discipline

A Texas father was sentenced to four years in prison for injury to a child for whipping, pinching and kicking his duct tape-bound 10-year-old son.

David W. Dill, 49, of Kerrville, is a fundamentalist Christian who said his abuse was discipline consistent with Old Testament teachings, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

A judge sentenced Dill Monday on the jury's January conviction, the newspaper reported.

"Up until the jury's verdict, I thought I was innocent. I thought what I did was OK ... based on the Bible," Dill testified Monday, saying that he agreed with the verdict.

Dill's defense lawyer, Stephen Harpold, requested probation, saying Dill's wife divorced him last month and Child Protective Services seeks to terminate Dill's parental rights to his three minor children.

"This is not discipline. It's a sick, violent assault. The fact that it was committed by a father doesn't make it better. It makes it worse," prosecutor Lucy Wilke said, adding that the Dill had meted out such discipline more than once, and that he still believes in his original Old Testament view of discipline.

"What I have a really hard time getting my hands around is how a person of your intellect could ever justify this kind of discipline with a child," Texas Distict Judge Keith Williams said.

Youth Minister Sentenced for Sex with 15 Year-Old Girl

A former youth minister at the Village Baptist Church was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison for having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Doug Dwayne Davis, 31, of Oklahoma City, was arrested at the church a year ago and resigned.

The victim was a girl who was visiting from Vinita where he had been a minister before.

He had been a trusted friend of the girl’s family, police reported.

The victim said she stayed with him and his wife and he had sex with her on March 13, 2009, after his wife left for work.

Davis pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree rape and one count of making lewd proposals over his cell phone. He will be on probation for 10 years after his release and must register as a sex offender for life.

Church Music Minister Sentenced for Sex with Teenage Girl

A former music minister at Millburn’s Community Congregational Church and former choir director and organist for Congregation B’nai Jeshurun was sentenced to five years in prison on April 1.

Warren Halsey Brown pleaded guilty to a sexual assault charge in front of Union County Judge Robert Mega. The case surrounded Brown’s sexual relations with a 15-year-old student from Kent Place School in Summit where he taught music for 15 years before leaving in October 2008.

Brown is eligible for parole after two and a half years and must register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law with parole supervision for life.

He was originally ordered to have no contact with the victim, but according to reports, the student asked that the plea agreement be revised to allow contact with Brown after she turns 18.

Brown was arrested in February 2009 after the victim’s parents grew suspicious of the relationship and notified police.

Brown reportedly met the teenager in September 2007 at the school. Their sexual relationship began in July 2008.

Pastor Sentenced for Sexual Assault of Teen Girl

A pastor was sentenced to 10 years probation Friday after pleading "no contest" to a charge of sexually assaulting a child.

Dallas County prosecutors say Lester Cody III assaulted the girl when she was 15 and 16. Cody was given deferred adjudication probation, which means he will not have a criminal record if he follows the terms of his probation. He must also pay a $10,000 fine.

Cody was a minister at Faith Crossing Church in Forney when he was arrested, but prosecutors say the abuse occurred when the church was in Mesquite. Cody was the girl’s minister and a family friend.

The victim remained silent about the molestation until she heard a sermon about forgiveness in her new church, said Dallas County prosecutor Meredith Behgooy. She approached the pastor in October 2006 at age 20 to ask how she could forgive someone who molested her. He told her she needed to call the police.

Christian Worship Leader Sentenced for Sexual Assault of Teen Girl

A former worship leader at Berthoud’s Grace Place Church was sentenced to 25 days in jail through a work-release program on Thursday.

Michael “Brett” Wilson also received five years of sex offender probation and 60 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty in February to sexually assaulting a teenage girl several years ago.

District Court Judge Terence A. Gilmore sentenced Wilson, 50, for an amended count one of unlawful sexual contact, a class 1 misdemeanor; and an additional count two of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class 4 felony.

The victim and her friends sat in the courtroom when Wilson’s sentence was read on Thursday.

On Dec. 8, 2009, Loveland police arrested Wilson on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in February 2002 when he was performing councilor duties at the church.

Catholic Priest Sentenced for Sexual Assault of Three Hatian Boys

A Canadian missionary who pleaded guilty to sex crimes Thursday is remorseful and hopes to one day resume his work, his lawyer said.

The missionary, John Duarte, who once served as a Roman Catholic priest in southwestern Ontario, was convicted of sexual interference involving three teens in Haiti between 2000 and 2006.

He was sentenced to 18 months in jail, with credit for 10 months already served, followed by three years on strict probation.

His lawyer, Andrew Bradie, said Duarte was remorseful and had made a step forward.

"He's a person who can do tremendous things and help; on the other hand he had this weakness," Bradie said.

"I'm hopeful somewhere down the road when he is released, finished his probation, he'll resume the compassionate work he can do to help the community, this one or somewhere else."

Duarte was arrested in the Dominican Republic in October 2009 and extradited to Canada to face the charges related to the sexual exploitation of boys in Haiti.

Court was told he gave money and gifts, including the promise of payments for schooling, in exchange for sexual favours.

Duarte served Catholic parishes in London, Leamington, St. Clair Beach and Windsor - all in southwestern Ontario - before moving to Haiti in 2003.

Born-Again Christian Sentenced for Rape of Teenage Girl

A Salem man who used to dress as a cowboy and put on a Wild West-style sharpshooting show to raise money for his church has been sentenced to up to seven years in prison for raping a teenage girl.

Joseph Elliott, a born-again Christian who used to perform under the stage name the "Calvary Kid" while wearing a black Stetson with a cross on it, was sentenced on Wednesday to five to seven years behind bars followed by five years of probation. He was convicted this week of raping and assaulting a Lynn girl he knew in her mid-teens. He was acquitted of charges of raping the victim’s sister.

Catholic Priest Pleads Guilty for Child Pornography

A Roman Catholic priest from a parish in south St. Louis has pleaded guilty to a federal child pornography charge.

James Patrick Grady of St. Raphael the Archangel was one of three men arrested last summer when he responded to an Internet advertisement for young females for sex. The posts were part of an undercover investigation, and Grady was arrested when he traveled to a Maryland Heights home to meet with what he though was a 16-year-old girl. He admitted after his arrest that he had intended to have sex with the girl.

Investigators also found more than 100 pornographic images on a laptop the parish had purchased for Grady's personal use.

Grady, 58, will be sentenced June 25th. He could face 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. In addition, Grady has agreed to forfeit his Toyota Camry.

Five Hindus Sentenced for Murder of Newlyweds

A court in northern India has sentenced to death five men for murdering a young couple who married in defiance of caste traditions.

The five sentenced to hang on Tuesday over the so-called "honour killing" were relatives of the woman, named Babli, whose body was found alongside her husband Manoj's mutilated corpse in June 2007, in Haryana state.

The two were slain near Karnal district after a local "khap panchayat", or caste council, decreed they both belonged to the same sub-caste and were therefore "brother and sister".

Council chief Ganga Raj was given a life sentence by district judge Vani Gopal Sharma, who lashed out at the councils.

"Khap panchayats have functioned contrary to the constitution, ridiculed it and have become a law unto themselves," the judge said.

India's ancient Hindu caste system was banned soon after the country's independence from Britain more than six decades ago, but its influence remains powerful.

Indian media hailed the "landmark judgment" as a victory against the notorious councils, which have acted with impunity as parallel judicial bodies.

Executions in India are rare and the five condemned men - who dragged the newly-weds from a bus before killing them - said they would appeal to a higher court against their sentences.

There are no official figures for the number of honour killings in India, but social activists say hundreds of young men and women die every year - especially in Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh states.

Most are either driven to suicide or are killed by family members or outraged neighbours for daring to marry outside their caste and bringing "dishonour" to their communities.

The killings often have the tacit approval of village councils, which wield considerable political clout. Prevention is sometimes hampered by police sympathy for traditional council rulings and witnesses can be hard to find.

An Indian home ministry official said in February the government was considering amending the penal code to deal specifically with "honour killings" and provide tough punishment to curb a rise in cases.

Christian Woman Sentenced for Starving Children

A woman who starved her four children and herself, telling them God would provide for their family, was sentenced today to eight years in prison by a judge who labeled her a "passive, self-centered and narcissistic individual" who violated the tenets of the Bible.

Superior Court Judge N. Peter Conforti, sitting in Newton, ordered Estelle Walker, 50, of New York City, to serve four years before becoming eligible for parole. She was given credit for the 460 days she already served in the Sussex County jail, meaning she’ll be eligible for parole in about 33 months.

Before imposing the sentence, Conforti told Walker that the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments, is filled with references to motherhood and how mothers should care for their children.

"The court has read the Bible, too. Mothers are told to love their children," Conforti told Walker, whose attorney had argued she failed to provide food to her children — ages 8, 9, 11 and 13 at the time — because she was praying for divine intervention.

Jehovah's Witness Sentenced for Sexual Assault

A paedophile raped and sexually assaulted women and girls over a period of 40 years by using their religion to keep the abuse secret.

Despite one revealing it to the Jehovah's Witness elders, no help was given, a court heard.

Now George Arthur Cockerill, 78, has been jailed indefinitely after he admitted 19 rapes, four counts of sexual activity with a child, six counts of indecency with a child, one sex assault and two counts of indecency with a child.

Judge Roger Thorn QC, sitting at Hull Crown Court, said: "You have pleaded guilty to 32 serious counts that reflect your sexual depravity.

"The reality is that, from beginning to end, it is extended over 40 years. You have wasted your life and caused untold misery.

"As one victim said, you have stolen her childhood.

"You have been the most terrible hypocrite, passing yourself off as a law-abiding member of the community and using religion as a tool of subjection to control your victims.

"That is why I'm satisfied this remained a secret for so long."

Cockerill was sentenced to imprisonment for public protection for a minimum of six years.

He will not be released until the Parole Board believe he is no longer a danger.

Cockerill, of Hull, was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Prosecutor David Dixon said: "He made one victim pray afterwards, linking the assault to the religion she had been devoted to for many years.

"She had pleaded with him not to do it.

"One girl tried to get the church elders to do something about him, but to no avail."

The attacks came to light after one woman told her doctor and then contacted the police.

The police then discovered more victims.

Cockerill has worked in the area as a butcher.

He served in the Army for eight years and has been involved with the Jehovah's Witnesses for a number of years.

A spokesperson for the Jehovah's Witnesses said: "We do not tolerate in any way that kind of behaviour. When this was brought to our attention Mr Cockerill was disfellowshipped and therefore he is no longer a Jehovah's Witness."

AOH Pastor Sentenced for Mail Fraud

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush raised millions of dollars to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Pastor Gary Dante Johnson did everything he could to get a piece of that for his church.

But the church, as Johnson later admitted, sat more than 100 miles north of the coast in Marengo County, and did not sustain a scratch in the storm.

Most of the $20,000 awarded to the church by the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund wound up supporting a personal spending spree for Johnson, prosecutors said, ranging from hotel rooms to restaurants to purchases at the clothing store New York Hi Style.

On Friday, Chief U.S. District Judge William Steele sentenced Johnson, 28, of Mount Vernon, to almost three years in prison for mail fraud, and ordered him to repay the Bush-Clinton fund.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Sigler held to the plea bargain in recommending the minimum sentence under advisory guidelines. But, he said, Johnson's conduct stood out among the roughly 100 Katrina fraud cases that his office has prosecuted.

"Frankly, I thought I had seen my worst FEMA case when one defendant stole his dead brother's identity," Sigler said.

At least the defendant in that fake ID crime was seeking shelter. Johnson, by contrast, apparently was motivated by pure greed. Sigler said.

According to court records, Johnson applied for funds in July 2006 for Myrtlewood AOH Church in Sweet Water, where he served as pastor. He falsely stated that the hurricane damaged the church's roof and caused mold on the inside ceiling.

Christian Sentenced for Botched Circumcision of Son

A Metro Vancouver man who circumcised his four-year-old son at home with a razor blade and blood coagulant meant for horses was sentenced Thursday to one year in jail followed by two years probation.

The man, identified only as DJW due to a publication ban, was found guilty in B.C. Supreme Court in October of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

On Wednesday, prosecutor Daniel Porte called for a jail term of 12 to 24 months followed by three years probation.

In April 2007, the man gave his son, DJ, honey wine before placing him on garbage bags on the kitchen floor. DJW then cut away the boy's foreskin with a razor blade.

As his son cried, the man sprinkled on him Wonder Dust, a blood coagulant meant for horses.

According to a summary of the case in Justice Marion Allan's October 2009 ruling, DJW, a former Jehovah's Witness, had told DJ the procedure would grant him "extra special protection from God" and allow him to eat Passover lamb, ice cream and pick all the movies he wanted for a week.

DJ eventually had to be taken to hospital, where the circumcision was completed.

DJW initially claimed a religious exemption but dropped the argument based on the judge's finding that the procedure wasn't performed with reasonable care, his former lawyer, Doug Christie told The Vancouver Sun in October.

Baptist Youth Minister Convicted of Sexual Assault

A Connecticut jury has convicted a former youth minister of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl he had been counseling and sending naked photos to her.

Jurors at Bridgeport Superior Court returned guilty verdicts Wednesday against David Esarey, who was the youth minister at Stepney Baptist Church in Monroe until his arrest in 2008.

The Connecticut Post reports Esarey mouthed the words "I love you" to his crying wife and then shrugged after he was found guilty of second-degree sexual assault, promoting a minor in an obscene performance, possessing child porn and risk of injury to a minor.

Sentencing was set for May 14. Esarey faces up to 95 years in prison.
